Since Vatican II, priests and people have been encouraged to work together in a "common effort to attain fullness in unity". The pastoral council is made up of up to six members nominated by the parish; they in turn can co-opt other members. The role of the parish council is to advise the Parish Priest and help him in the administration of the parish, and to provide a forum of communication for the parish. Parishioners are encouraged to bring up for discussion any matters that they would like to have discussed by the council and they are also very welcome to attend the meetings.
