ADVENT is the liturgical season of preparation for Christmas, a word derived from the Latin adventus, which means coming, namely the coming of Christ more fully into our world and our lives. The Advent wreath symbolises this preparation over four weeks for "the Light that came into the world".

Our Lady of Compassion Closed
The church will re-open for Masses from Thursday 3 December at 10:00. Weekend Masses will begin on the Second Sunday of Advent at the usual times: Saturday 5 December at 18:00 and Sunday 6 December at 08:30 and 10:30. Weekend Masses will need to be booked as before this second lockdown, by Ken Lowe. You will receive a confirmation in which you will be advised of your allocated seat number. Please do not turn up to the weekend Masses without receiving your booking confirmation as the church is likely to be full, in which case you will be refused entry.
It is important to reaffirm that, at present, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended.
The 10:30 Mass and evening prayer on Sundays are live-streamed.
It is mandatory for those aged 11 and over to wear a face mask or face covering whilst in church, unless they are exempt on health grounds. Stewards have been asked to ensure that everyone complies with this as it is the law. For the safety and protection of everyone, those who choose not to do so will not be able to enter the church.
Everyone attending Mass should bring their own masks. There will, however, be a small supply available in the church porch for anyone who is unaware of this change or has forgotten to bring one. A suggested donation of £2 per mask will be requested.
Thank you for your understanding.
Please also help us to keep everyone safe by not attending Mass if you are feeling unwell.
Live streaming of Mass
Sunday Mass is being live-streamed from Our Lady of Compassion church at 10:30, so that parishioners can join online. To view live online, join our Facebook Group: OLC Saffron Walden. Email Ken Lowe if you wish to be added to the group. Streaming starts 5 minutes before Mass begins.
The Uttlesford Hub Telephone Befriending Team
The Uttlesford Hub Telephone Befriending Team, consisting mostly of St Vincent De Paul members and parishioners of Our Lady of Compassion Church, continues to offer friendship and support with a weekly telephone call to those in need of a friendly ear and cheery word during this extended period of COVID-19. The longer the pandemic continues, the more our volunteers’ help is being sought by residents of Uttlesford who are lonely and feeling isolated from the rest of the Community. We need more volunteers - CAN YOU HELP? It only involves one or two telephone calls a week! If so, please email Andy Pryer, SVP, or telephone him on 01729 777673 for further information, OR alternatively, contact Jean Perkins, SVP, or call on 01799 522135. Thank you.
Fr David's homilies can be read here: Fr David's homilies.
A link to the text of each Sunday's liturgy can be found on the Services page next to the particular Sunday.
Sunday Evening Prayers on Zoom
You can join in Evening Prayers on Sundays at 19:00 via Zoom - you will need to create an account or download the App, but it’s easy and free.
Sunday Evening Drink and Chat
On Sunday evenings at 19:30, following evening prayer, all parishioners are invited to pour themselves a drink and connect to others via Zoom for a relaxed and informal chat. Check the parish Facebook page for the log in details or contact Ken Lowe.
Our Weekly Offering
The main part of the income to Our Lady of Compassion has always come from the collection plate. Income is down quite considerably since the beginning of the lock down. If you are able, please consider using a standing order to send your donation as this is the quickest way for the funds to come to the church. Standing order details can be obtained from Ken Lowe. Alternatively, donations can be made online which can be accessed via the Diocesan website. The parish will receive its particular donations via the monthly parish statement. All Easter donations go directly to the parish priest; selecting the ‘Easter’ option will ensure that this is the case. Thank you.
Help from our SVP
In these difficult times the SVP is continuing its local support work as much as is possible, communicating by phone now visiting has been prohibited. If you, or someone you know, may need support, or if you feel you can help in any way, please contact Jean Perkins or call on 01799 522135.
As well as providing the opportunity to follow the livestream mass on Sundays, the parish Facebook group is also a great way of receiving up to date information and keeping in touch with other parishioners.
The weekly newsletter continues to be produced and published on the parish website's newsletter page.
Like other churches in Saffron Walden, the Catholic church has a lively and numerous congregation, drawing its parishioners from a geographically large parish, stretching from Steeple Bumpstead to Chrishall, from Great Chesterford to Newport and forming part of the North Essex Deanery of the Diocese of Brentwood.
Our website is part of the framework in which we parishioners work together. It contains details of the organisational groups which are the external shape of our commitment to God, our parish and each other. You and your family are welcome to join us on our journey of faith. We welcome contributions to the website from parishioners - please send us details of parish activities so that we we can publicise them.
If you are new to the Parish, have moved recently or are planning to move please email Fr David Clemens.
